About the Item
An outstanding 17th century pair of brass, copper and silver inlay Stirrups with David’s Star -each stirrup has two stars hand hammered from left and ride sides. The craftsmanship of silver inlay is absolutely incredible and extremely finely done.
During the Ottoman period Jews, together with a lot of other communities of the empire, enjoyed a certain level of prosperity and business success. Compared with other Ottoman citizens, they were the main power in commerce and trade as well as in diplomacy and other high offices. From the 16th to the 18th century, Jewish merchants dominated the chocolate, vanilla and horse trade, exporting to Jewish centres across Europe, mainly Italy, France and Germany. At the time it was a very sizeable number of Jewish citizens of the Islamic area who have achieved to high rank, to power, to great financial influence, to significant and recognised intellectual attainment.
In rural areas at the time, animal trading was mainly done by Jews. First and foremost, noble lords required horses for their prestige, to go out riding and to equip their cavalry. From the other hand , for European ,mostly Germans peasants, horses were indispensable for labor and transportation. Demand was extremely high.
Jews didn’t need a guild certificate to engage in the trade. They had wide-ranging trade networks, and enough financial liquidity to be able to operate.
The horse and its accessories related trade made by Jews was really essential and grew with time so big, that in 18th century the special book named “The Complete Horse Connoisseur” was published in Germany at the behest of Karl Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The text was intended as a handbook and dictionary for those who needed help understanding the language when dealing with Jewish horse traders. It is a unique object, and practically made for the permanent collection of the Jewish Museum Berlin, which opened in 2001.
This pair of Stirrups is extremely rare and truly unique piece of history.
