About the Item

c. 1950s; The Dahlberg Co. - Minneapolis, MN This example retains its matching Dahlberg pillow speaker and comes stored in a fitted carrying case, an uncommon configuration compared to wall-mount units. This mid-century Dahlberg coin-op radio was produced for hotels, hospitals, and motels offering timed, private listening through the brand's signature pillow speaker. Housed in a glossy cream Bakelite shell with streamline detailing, the unit features the classic dome-top coin mechanism labeled "Deposit 1 to 5 Dimes", red dial and volume wheels, and a horizontal station readout typical of postwar commercial radios. When activated, the built-in timer powered the radio for a set period, sending sound exclusively through the small under-pillow transducer-an early solution for quiet, individualized audio in shared or sensitive environments. This piece may be a salesman sample radio given its carrying case.
