About the Item

Carved Wooden Folding Easel, North African or Middle Eastern Folk Art, Early 20th Century Hand-carved hardwood. A finely carved folding easel distinguished by its elaborate geometric and symbolic ornamentation, likely originating from the Maghreb or the broader Middle Eastern region. Executed in solid hardwood, the piece features an intricate language of incised decoration: circular sunburst motifs, zigzag borders, and elongated arched openings reminiscent of traditional architectural forms. The central panel is dominated by a large rosette carved in deep relief, framed by a series of triangular and linear patterns. The hinged construction allows the easel to fold nearly flat, demonstrating its functional intent as a portable stand—possibly for manuscripts, religious texts, or artwork. The craftsmanship speaks to vernacular woodworking traditions in which functionality and ornament were inseparable.
