About the Item
Commemorative medal issued in in 1882 by the “Comitato Popolare” (People’s Committee) to mark the 6th centenary (600th anniversary) of the (1282–1882).
Obverse (front): Shows the in Palermo, with the inscription
“COMITATO POPOLARE” and “PALERMO 1882” underneath.
Reverse (back): Features a seated female allegorical figure (possibly representing Sicily) holding a sword and shield, with the legend:
“VI CENTENARIO DEL VESPRO” (“6th Centenary of the Vespers”).
The Vespri Siciliani was a 1282 uprising in against Angevin rule. In 1882, widespread celebrations were organized in Palermo for its 600th anniversary, and this medal comes from those celebrations.
It is rare and in very good condition.
