About the Item

This exceptional cast bronze relief plaque depicts His Majesty King Edward VII in high profile, majestically attired in the full regalia of the Order of the Garter, encircled by a laurel and garter motif and surmounted by a royal crown bearing the year 1901, the beginning of his reign. The plaque bears the signature “W. S. Frith Sc.”, the renowned British sculptor William Silver Frith (1850–1924), crisply inscribed at the lower left of the relief, testifying to its authenticity and artistic provenance. Rich in original, untouched patination, the bronze has matured into an exquisite surface texture with light verdigris and oxidized highlights—hallmarks of genuine age and dignity. The modeling of Edward’s features is regal and refined, capturing the quiet strength and constitutional grace of Britain’s monarch at the dawn of the 20th century. This piece was one of only two plaques commissioned for a commemorative public fountain, funded at a cost of £800, sculpted from Hopton Wood Stone and installed in Whitechapel, East London. The official unveiling was conducted by Charles Rothschild in 1911, a moment immortalized in surviving archival footage. The accompanying fountain was constructed by Henry Poole, a noted artisan famed for civic fountains across the United Kingdom. Provenance Rarity: This example is believed to be the only surviving twin of the original pair, with its sibling still affixed to the Whitechapel fountain. As such, this plaque represents a truly rare opportunity to acquire a museum-quality piece of British sculptural heritage—one that captures the ceremonial elegance of Edwardian civic life and the fine artistry of one of the period’s leading sculptors. Artist: William Silver Frith trained at the Royal Academy Schools and later taught at the South London Technical School of Art. His works appear in important public and institutional collections and remain celebrated for their classical balance and finely judged detail. A regal yet refined tribute to Edward VII and an enduring emblem of Britain’s civic artistic legacy, this signed bronze by William Silver Frith offers collectors, historians, and designers a sublime artefact of early 20th-century monumental art.
