About the Item
A rare Georgian pearlware pottery jug commemorating the Treaty of Paris on 30th May, 1814.
The Treaty of Paris ended the Napoleonic wars between France and Great Britain, Russia, Austria and Prussia and followed the abdication of Napoleon as Emperor on 6th April. As there was a subsequent Treaty of Paris signed on 20 November, 1815, the former treaty was often referred to as the First Peace of Paris.
This rare example is lightly potted and of round bulbous shape with a wide funnel shaped neck with a large pouring spout and flat top strap pouring handle applied to the side. The body of the jug is transfer printed in red with a plaque reading ‘PEACE of ERUOPE Signed at PARIS May 30, 1814’ the plaque is adorned by two maidens in flowing robes standing either side with British and French flags behind. The plaque has a wreath above incorporating the initials GR (George Rex). The jug has fruiting vine decorations to either side of the body and with a floral and grape pattern around the top rim and with red painted edges. The jug is not marked.
Provenance: acquired from the estate of a Cambridge Academic.
There is general age wear to the surface of the jug and the handle has been reattached at the top and bottom with a further short hairline crack to the top rim, however a very rare example.
