About the Item

A Rare German anti-Semitic beer stein from the late 19th century is a controversial and historically significant artifact, reflecting the anti-Semitic sentiments prevalent in German society during that period. In the late 19th century, Germany saw a resurgence of anti-Semitic attitudes fueled by political, social, and economic tensions. This period witnessed the rise of nationalist movements, economic competition, and perceived threats to traditional German culture, all of which contributed to the scapegoating of Jewish communities. This beer stein features caricatures and derogatory images of Jews; On one side there is a group of German nationals raising their glasses in a joyous ceremony under a cloud with an angel hovering above it and the slogan written underneath says "ERST WENN LIEGT DER JUD'DARNIEDER KEHREN GLIECK UND SEGEN WIEDER" which means "only when the Jews lie down will happiness and blessings return'. At the center an image of a glorious savior furnishing a sword and shield standing over a Talmud book amongst dense and sprouting foliage, his arm outstretched in an expelling way under an archway and castle in the background. On the last side are Jewish people portrayed with exaggerated physical features, demeaning stereotypes, and bags of coins in their hands walking through a dark castle archway a demonic angel hovering in their sky, looking back at the previous two scenes with saddened and depressing looks. On the lid, a lost Jew is depicted walking on a landscape seemingly wandering with a frowned expression and exaggerated demeaning features. Surrounding this prominent picture is a slogan written into the edges "DER JTZIG NIMMT DEN STAB ZUR HAND UND RAISET INS GELOBTE LAND" meaning "the current one takes the baton and raises it to the promised land". These depictions were intended to reinforce negative stereotypes and foster prejudice. Beer steins were popular drinking vessels in German culture, often used in taverns or social gatherings. Anti-Semitic beer steins served as both functional containers and propaganda tools, spreading and reinforcing anti-Semitic ideologies among the population. This Beer Stein prompts reflection on the historical roots of anti-Semitism and the persistence of stereotypes and prejudice. It underscores the importance of understanding and confronting intolerance while promoting respect for diversity and mutual understanding in contemporary society.

Transfer printed in blue is a scene of a soldier, a religious Jew, scales on a table, and a fox. Rare! Purim Drinking Mug, Bohemian, Circa, 1905 The central fish motif is symbolic of Purim, as this holiday occurs during the Hebrew month of Adar, who zodiacal symbol is fish. Fish also designate abundance, fertility, and good luck. At top in Hebrew, it says "With the entrance of Adar rejoicing is increased" Continuing at bottom "Luck of Adar, (luck of) fish, " and finally "L'Chayım Bridis, " a toast half in Yiddish ("To life, brothers!"). Drinking utensils specifically associated with Purim are very rare. While a few pewter wine flagons and silver wine cups for Purim are scattered across Jewish museum collections around the world, this is the only known vessel made for drinking beer that was decorated for this holiday.
