The full title page describes the work as “Taylor and His Generals; A Biography of Major-General Zachary Taylor; And Sketches of the Lives of Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs with a full account of the Actions of their Various Divisions in Mexico Up to the Present Time; Together with a Sketch of the Major-General Winfield Scott and an Account of his Divisions in Mexico.” Taylor fought and commanded troops in the War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and the Second of the Seminole Wars before playing a major role in the victory of the Mexican-American War. The book takes the reader through the early life of Taylor and his military career with a particular focus on his surprising victory at the Battle of Buena Vista. Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs that served under Taylor and Major-General Scott each get a chapter dedicated to their own history and military careers The Battle of Buena Vista took place in February of 1847 during the Mexican-American War. With only about 5,000 soldiers, Taylor repelled General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna...

Her Majesty’s Vase: A horse racing trophy by John Samuel Hunt
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This silver presentation vase is a small replica of the classical Roman ‘Warwick Vase’. The body is cast and chased with fruiting vines below the rim. The central field has a continuous band with bearded Bacchic heads floating above a lion’s mask and pelt. The applied handles comprise gnarled twisted vine stems. The spreading stem is set on a square foot which in turn sits on an ebonised wooden plinth base. The plinth is applied with two vacant laurel wreath cartouches and two rectangular plaques, one finely engraved with the Royal Coat of Arms and the other inscribed “Plymouth, Devonport and Cornwall Races 1845, the gift of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, Augustus Coryton Esqr, W. R. Fortescue Esqr, Stewards” and “Her Majesty’s Vase, value 100gs., for three-year-old and upwards – Heats, about two miles, starting at the T.Y.C. Starting-post, once round, to the Grand Stand Winning-post.” Fully marked and stamped on the side of the foot ‘Hunt & Roskell Late Storr & Mortimer 2225’. English, assayed for London 1845. Provenance: Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Sir John Barker-Mill, Baronet of Mottisfont.Thence by descent. John Barker (1803-1860) was created 1st Baronet ‘of Mottisfont in the County of Southampton’ on 16 March 1836. A noted racehorse owner, Barker won numerous prestigious trophies with Giantess, Cymba, Miss Ellis and Pugilist. His most prestigious horse, Leviathan, sire of Giantess, won 16 of 21 starts and was sold to George IV for 2,000 guineas. Plymouth, Devonport and Cornwall Races were held from 1828 until 1930. The racecourse was a flat, oval course of 12 furlongs with a straight run-in of 2 ½ furlongs. ‘Royal Plates...

1847 Ornamental Map of the United States Mexico by H. Phelps
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Offered is an original 1847 ornamental map of the U.S. entitled "Ornamental Map of the United States & Mexico" by Humphrey Phelps. The map was issued as an act of Congress by Phelps on Fulton Street, New York. The broadside is elaborately hand-colored. This is a very detailed and graphic propaganda map of the United States expressing U.S. dominance of the North American continent. The hand-colored map proclaims the Manifest Destiny, with the recent acquisition of Upper California and Texas at the conclusion of the Mexican-American War. The newly acquired land is boldly colored, standing in stark contrast to the rest of the U.S. The map details a potential route for a railroad running from New York City, to Buffalo, to Chicago, then west along the Oregon Trail to Oregon City. This route anticipates the construction of the transcontinental railroad by nearly 20 years. The map includes elaborately detailed renderings of George Washington, Hernan Cortez, and Montezuma at top to represent European expansion to the Americas. At bottom are four inset designs with text showing the following: a chronological history of the U.S. beginning from settlement to the U.S. victory in the Mexican-American war; an illustration of General Zachary Taylor with details on the Oregon Territory; an illustration of the Aztec Temple of the Sun in Tenochtitlan and a chronology of the Conquest of the Aztec Empire under Cortez; a portrait of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna...

Sam Houston Twice-Signed Collage
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an original document, twice-signed by Sam Houston as President of Texas. Dating to April 4, 1844, Houston signed this one-page pay order as the third president of the Republic of Texas, in order to reimburse Dr. Jack Shackelford for his purchase of "1 Box Sperm Candles." Shackelford had made this purchase earlier in August 1842 as he helped the Republic defend against the Mexican invasions of that year. The document reads in full: "Genl Sam Houston, For Executive Contingents, to J. Shackelford, August 11, 1842, To 1 Box Sperm Candles 36.3 lbs 759 $27.56 par funds." Below the text of the invoice, Houston writes, "Approved 4th Apl. 1844 Sam Houston" with his distinctive paraph. Over the top of text he adds his bold signature ordering to "pay this, Sam Houston," again adding his elaborate paraph. "J. Shackelford" is written in the lower right corner. All text and signatures are in ink; Houston's signature is especially bold. Sam Houston was a soldier, an important leader of the Texas Revolution, and an American politician. Many considered him the father of the Republic of Texas. During the Texas Revolution as the region fought for independence from Mexico, Houston proved himself a great military leader. Despite the crushing defeat at the Alamo, being outnumbered and under-equipped, Houston managed to lead his soldiers to capture the Mexican General Santa Anna...

1846 Antique Map of Texas, Oregon, California, and Regions Adjoining by Mitchell
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is a finely colored example of the 1846 version of Mitchell's seminal map of Texas, Oregon Territory, California, and the Transmississippi West. Published in 1846 from Philadelphia, Mitchell's map of the West was one of the first large-format commercially published maps to show the Transmissisippi West, after the annexation of Texas in 1845. The map was perhaps the single most popular map of the period, used by gold seekers, immigrants, and others whose lives, fortunes, and attentions were focused Westward at the outset of the Mexican-American War. Beginning in 1846, the Transmississippi West was of particular interest to the American populace, as a result of two recent and related events. In 1845, Texas was admitted to the Union. This prompted Mexico to invade Texas in 1846, thus starting the U.S.-Mexican War. General curiosity about the new state as well as interest in the war led to Mitchell's timely map becoming quite popular. As stated in the "Accompaniment to Mitchell's new map of Texas, Oregon and California...," in which the map was sometimes issued, Mitchell used the latest and best cartographic sources for the map, including Arrowsmith's 1841 map of Texas, Fremont's and Emory's maps of their explorations in the region, compiled data from the Lewis & Clark expedition, Nicollet's map of the region between the Mississippi and the Missouri, and Wilkes map of Oregon...
