Alfred Dunhill He inherited his father’s London saddlery in 1893. Following the increase in motor car ownership, Alfred developed the business to include motoring accessories, which he called ‘Dunhill’s Motorities’. This included goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats, and it wasn’t long before the brand became associated with men’s general motoring attire. They opened two shops in Mayfair and had a catalogue of over 1300 items. Between the 1904 and 1905, Dunhill introduced their ‘Windshield Pipe’, to help drivers combat the effect of wind and travel on their ability to smoke. This marked both the end of the ‘motorities’ focus and their entry into the world of smoking ephemera, and they shortly opened their first tobacconist in 1907 on Duke Street. The proximity to several esteemed Private Members Clubs around the Mayfair, St James’ area ensured that the venture was a success. (From Nicholas Wells With Thanks). Ancient Silver King Croesus Coin, 550 BC
Located in London, GB
The first silver coin. Issued by the famously wealthy King Croesus of Lydia, circa 550 BC. The front of the coin with a leaping, open-jawed lion, attacking a large bull. The reverse with two incuse punches - impact marks designed to show the purity of the metal. In late 7th century BC Lydia, a new and revolutionary piece of technology was developed - coinage. At first, coins were made from crude lumps of electrum, an alloy of gold and silver that was found amongst the shale of the river Pactolus. However, it was not until the fabled King Croesus came to power and discovered how to separate electrum into gold and silver that the first bi-metallic system of coinage was created. The ancient world now had a fully flexible and efficient medium of exchange. The significance of this invention is hard to overstate. Quite simply, it democratised wealth; facilitating trade, creating markets, spreading ideas and pushing humanity into a New Era of enterprise and commerce. Weight 10.70 g. Ancient Greek Sicily Tetradrachm Coin from Leontini, 450 BC
Located in London, GB
A stunning, beautiful example of an ancient Greek silver tetradrachm from Leontini, Sicily. Struck circa 450 BC from dies of the finest severe or early classical style. The obverse (image II) with a graceful portrait of the patron deity of Leontini, Apollo. He is shown facing right, gazing skywards and crowned with a laurel wreath. His long hair tied into a chignon, sitting at the nape of the neck, loose curls cascade down his cheek and along the forehead. The reverse (image i) with a ferocious, open-jawed lion facing right and framed by the produce of the region, four plump grains of barley. The legend around reading: ΛΕΟΝΤΙΝΟΝ. "Of the Leontines." 5th century BC Greece is perhaps the most important period in the development of western culture. The art created during this glorious age of innovation was also experiencing a dramatic change; evolving from the stiff, powerful depictions of archaic art to the sensuous, refined elegance of the Classical. This coin was created during the middle of the century by a city just freed from the rule of tyrants. Perhaps in celebration of this the Leontines chose a new design for their coinage. The obverse no longer shows the old Syracusan image of the four horse chariot but instead boasts a portrait of Leontini's patron deity, executed with poised elegance. The reverse retains the city's old depiction of the lion, the sacred beast of Apollo, now shown in a more lively, playful style. The reverse also works as a pun on the city name, for the Greek word for lion is Leon. Although we have seen examples of this type in higher grades, this coin is so beautifully centered and toned that it is amongst the most appealing we have encountered. A truly delightful work of fifth century BC art...

The reverse with an incuse punch. The gold darics of the Persian Empire were not only one of the very first coin types but they were amongst the most successful, influential and enduring. Their extremely high gold content (over 95%) meant they were accepted throughout the ancient world. The daric was the standard method of payment...
