A very rare Scottish Mauchline wooden postal ruler and paper folder decorated with a scene of the beach & cliffs in cromer, norfolk and probably dating from the mid 19th century. While originally made as souvenir items this ruler also provides a real insight to postal history. Presented is the 1847 First Edition of Taylor and His Generals. Published by E.H. Butler & Company, the book has numerous portraits and engravings throughout. It has been beautifully rebound in quarter leather and marble paper boards. The spine has gilt embossed decoration stating that it’s a first edition. The book is housed in a custom-built archival slipcase with a photo of Taylor on the front.
Written and published before Taylor ran for the Presidency, this book would have been a powerful propaganda tool for the soon-to-be 12th President of the United States. The full title page describes the work as “Taylor and His Generals; A Biography of Major-General Zachary Taylor; And Sketches of the Lives of Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs with a full account of the Actions of their Various Divisions in Mexico Up to the Present Time; Together with a Sketch of the Major-General Winfield Scott and an Account of his Divisions in Mexico.”
Taylor fought and commanded troops in the War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and the Second of the Seminole Wars before playing a major role in the victory of the Mexican-American War. The book takes the reader through the early life of Taylor and his military career with a particular focus on his surprising victory at the Battle of Buena Vista. Generals Worth, Wool, and Twiggs that served under Taylor and Major-General Scott each get a chapter dedicated to their own history and military careers

This silver presentation vase is a small replica of the classical Roman ‘Warwick Vase’. The body is cast and chased with fruiting vines below the rim. The central field has a continuous band with bearded Bacchic heads floating above a lion’s mask and pelt. The applied handles comprise gnarled twisted vine stems. The spreading stem is set on a square foot which in turn sits on an ebonised wooden plinth base. The plinth is applied with two vacant laurel wreath cartouches and two rectangular plaques, one finely engraved with the Royal Coat of Arms and the other inscribed “Plymouth, Devonport and Cornwall Races 1845, the gift of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, Augustus Coryton Esqr, W. R. Fortescue Esqr, Stewards” and “Her Majesty’s Vase, value 100gs., for three-year-old and upwards – Heats, about two miles, starting at the T.Y.C. Starting-post, once round, to the Grand Stand Winning-post.” Fully marked and stamped on the side of the foot ‘Hunt & Roskell Late Storr & Mortimer 2225’. English, assayed for London 1845.

John Barker (1803-1860) was created 1st Baronet ‘of Mottisfont in the County of Southampton’ on 16 March 1836. A noted racehorse owner, Barker won numerous prestigious trophies with Giantess, Cymba, Miss Ellis and Pugilist. His most prestigious horse, Leviathan, sire of Giantess, won 16 of 21 starts and was sold to George IV for 2,000 guineas.

19th Century Italian Voting Box Tuscan Confraternity Carved Barrel Ballot Box

19th century Italian Confraternity Voting Urn of Tuscan origin realized with turned and carved poplar wood. The barrel-shaped central body, in which hands were inserted to insert the ballot ball into one of the two holes connected to the small drawer below, where on the front we find the inscription YES and NO related to voting, SI and NO, in order to distinguish for and against votes on paper, then collected in two separate small drawers, just below. Standing on four curly feet, it has a beautiful curved handle and carved parts at both ends, highlighted by ebonized details.
In a fraternity, this ballot box was used to collegially adjudicate community choices. In good age related condition, with sogns of wear and use. E pluribus unum – Latin for "Out of many, one" (also translated as "One out of many" or "One from many") – is a traditional motto of the United States, appearing on the Great Seal along with Annuit cœptis (Latin for "he approves the undertaking [lit. 'things undertaken']") and Novus ordo seclorum (Latin for "New order of the ages"); its inclusion on the seal was approved by an Act of Congress in 1782. While its status as national motto was for many years unofficial, E pluribus unum was still considered the de facto motto of the United States from its early history. Eventually, the United States Congress passed an act (H. J. Resolution 396), adopting "In God We Trust" as the official motto in 1956.
The thirteen letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM makes its use symbolic of the thirteen original states like the thirteen stripes on the US flag. The meaning of the phrase originates from the concept that out of the union of the original Thirteen Colonies emerged a new single nation.
