A rare and exceptionally handsome 1920s Majolica character mug by Sarreguemines, France, depicting a youthful Napoleon Bonaparte in vibrant color and exquisite detail. This beautifully modeled mug captures Napoleon with piercing gray eyes, a crisp red and green military uniform, and his iconic bicorne hat, rendered in classic French Majolica glaze. The interior reveals a luminous blue-green glaze, a hallmark of Sarreguemines’ artistry during the early 20th century. An example of this exact mug is held in the permanent collection of the Sarreguemines Museum, underscoring its importance as a collectible and its rarity on the market. The underside is clearly stamped: “Sarreguemines France, 461.” This piece is in excellent vintage condition, with only minor surface wear to the base and no chips, cracks, or repairs, a remarkable preservation for a nearly century-old ceramic. Character mugs, also known as face mugs or toby jugs, became highly collectible in the 19th and early 20th centuries, prized for their artistry and humor. Sarreguemines, one of France’s most renowned faience and Majolica manufacturers, produced some of the most refined and expressive examples.
