Space Age Historical Memorabilia

SPACE AGE STYLE

Vintage Space Age furniture captured post–World War II optimism with swooping shapes, bowed lines and experimentation with new materials including plastic and fiberglass.

From the launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957 to the landing of Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon in 1969, the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States propelled advancements in technology that transformed culture. Space Age design encompassed fashion, architecture, cars, furniture and objects for the home, bringing wonder and hope for the future into everyday life.

Coinciding with Pop art, Space Age style featured bold colors and forms. Eero Aarnio’s Ball chair, which debuted in 1966, used molded fiberglass for a capsule-like space while Verner Panton’s 1959 Panton chair was a single piece of molded plastic for a gravity-defying S shape. Red versions of Olivier Mourgue’s 1964 Djinn chair were futuristic enough to appear on the space station in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Today, Joe Colombo is revered as a master of modern Italian design thanks to the provocative modular furniture pieces he created, such as the Tube chair and the Elda armchair, both of which embody the future-forward spirit of the Space Age.

The Space Age spirit extended to home building too. The futuristic Case Study Houses, which were designed by the likes of Pierre Koenig, Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra and Whitney R. Smith, are considered a high point of modernism and the Southern California lifestyle.

Sometimes the nods to space exploration were more literal, like moon and star motifs or the 1965 Eclisse lamp by Vico Magistretti that saw the mid-century Italian designer integrating a movable inner shade to “eclipse” the light source. Alongside the pioneering moon missions, JVC manufactured the Videosphere portable television reminiscent of the Apollo 11 space helmets.

Although the style faded in the 1970s — with the 1975 joining of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts signaling a new era of cooperation and the global oil crisis impacting the availability of plastics — the era’s innovations influenced designers into the 21st century such as Zaha Hadid and Djivan Schapira.

James Bond Moonraker Original Vintage Australian Daybill Movie Poster, 1979
Located in Devon, GB
Capitalising on the sci-fi space craze in the wake of 'Star Wars,' EON Productions opted to postpone filming 'For Your Eyes Only' in favour of loosely adapting Ian Fleming's 'Moonraker' as the eleventh instalment in the James Bond series. And so Roger Moore's fourth outing as agent 007 saw him head into outer space to prevent a plot to wipe out the world population and recreate humanity with a master race. Despite production costs more than double those of 'The Spy Who Loved Me' (1977), the space-age lark became the highest grossing 007 movie to date, until usurped by 'Goldeneye' in 1995. The Australian Daybill poster featured the same spectacular silvery artwork by American artist Daniel Goozee as the British and US poster campaigns, which pictured Bond in a spacesuit rather than his typical tux. Although a similar format, Australian day bills are significantly rarer than US insert posters.

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Original US Movie Poster, 1980
Located in Devon, GB
A rare example of a sequel that transcends the original, Lucasfilm's 'The Empire Strikes Back' was the highest grossing film of 1980 and has come to be regarded as the best film in the original 'Star Wars' trilogy. The epic space saga continued as the Imperial forces pursue the Rebel Alliance, while Master Yoda trains Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi Knight, despite Darth Vader's determination to turn him to the dark side. One of the greatest plot twists in cinematic history unfolds at the film's climax, when Vader reveals to Luke that he is his father. This extremely rare ‘Style A’ US 40 x 60 poster is better known as the “Gone With The Wind” style poster, as artist Roger Kastel based his design on Tom Jung’s iconic poster for the 1967 re-release of ‘Gone With The Wind,’ to portray the romantic relationship between Han Solo and Princess Leia that would be explored in the film. Considered to be one of the most attractive and evocative of the original Star Wars posters, the same stunning design was used on the first US One Sheet and US 30x40 posters that were issued to theatres in May 1980. However, the ‘Gone With The Wind’ style posters were soon recalled and replaced by the much more common ‘Style B’ posters after actor Billy Dee Williams reportedly complained to 20th Century Fox that he wasn’t featured on the poster, despite his substantial role as Lando Calrissian and contractual billing in the film. The ‘Style B’ and every subsequent poster for the movie featured Lando somewhere in the design. As a recalled design, the ‘Gone With The Wind’ style posters are already a sought after rarity for collectors in any size, yet this oversized US 40x60 is particularly rare. US 30x40 and 40x60 posters...

Star Wars Original Vintage Movie Poster by Tom Jung, American, 1977
Located in Devon, GB
A rare US 30x40 cardstock poster for the first instalment of George Lucas' original, genre-defining, sci-fi trilogy 'Star Wars,' featuring Tom Jung's famous 'Style A' artwork designed for the more commonly seen US 'Style A' One Sheet posters, which has become one of the most instantly recognisable poster designs of all time. Perhaps economising, the printers simply used the One Sheet printing plate to print the 30x40 format poster rather than altering the design or dimensions. Jung was chosen to create the first poster artwork for the 1977 release of 'Star Wars,' based only on set photographs, a plot synopsis and descriptions of the characters and their motivations, along with a general theme of "Good over Evil," which he represented through the 'cross' formed by Luke Skywalker's lightsaber against the ghostly background visage of Darth Vader. Although a glamorous Princess Leia poses next to Luke, robes flowing behind her, Han Solo is notably absent. Droids C-3PO and R2-D2 were also omitted from Jung's original design, only added before the poster went to press by comic book artist Nick Cardy after a second, more fanciful reworking of Jung's composition was completed by the Hildebrandt Brothers, which included the droids on Lucasfilm's request. US 30x40 and 40x60 posters...
