About the Item

Victorian Wooden Yarn Swift / Wool Winder on Stand, c.1850 A fine mid-19th century umbrella swift or wool winder, dating to around 1850. Of fruitwood with a mellow honeyed patina, the piece is raised on a well-turned circular stepped base with brass fittings and bun feet. The central column rises to a decorative turned finial, above scissor-action arms tied with ribbons, which expand to hold skeins of yarn for winding into balls. Yarn swifts of this period were an essential part of domestic needlework and knitting, designed to prevent tangling and make the handling of woollen skeins easier. Free-standing examples on their own turned stands, such as this, are less common than clamp-mounted versions, and they combine functional design with decorative appeal. Dimensions: Height: 67.5 cm Base diameter: 20 cm Expanded width: approx. 60–65 cm Condition: Good antique condition, with surface wear and small marks consistent with age and use. The ribbons are likely later replacements but the mechanism remains intact and functional.
