About the Item

WWII Japanese Yosegaki Hinomaru “Good Luck” Flag – Silk with Leather-Reinforced Corners, Signed with Patriotic Slogans and Names This authentic Yosegaki Hinomaru (“Good Luck Flag”) dates to the Second World War and measures 28" × 38". Crafted of fine silk with leather-reinforced corners and original tie cords, it bears the classic red sun disc of Japan surrounded by hand-brushed calligraphy in black ink. The bold vertical inscription reads 武運長久 (Buun Chōkyū), translating to “Eternal Fortune in War”—a standard yet deeply meaningful blessing for military success. Other slogans include expressions such as 祈必勝 (Inori Hisshō), “Prayers for Certain Victory,” and personal dedications for safety and honor. Around the sun are dozens of signatures from family members, friends, and possibly community members, written at the time of the soldier’s departure. Historical Context Use: Yosegaki Hinomaru flags were personal morale talismans carried by Imperial Japanese soldiers. This example’s silk construction made it ideal for folding and wearing inside a helmet liner, keeping it close as a protective charm. Such flags were also flown at farewell ceremonies, displayed in barracks, and occasionally in the field for morale. For the recipient, the combined symbolism of the national flag and the personal blessings inscribed on it served as a reminder of home and duty. Condition: Very good for age, with strong color in the sun disc, intact silk fabric, legible inscriptions, and minimal foxing or fraying. Ink bleed-through is visible on the reverse, consistent with period examples. Display Orientation: Designed for horizontal presentation with inscriptions upright, but can be displayed vertically, as many were during wartime ceremonies. Given this flag’s silk construction, leather-reinforced corners, bold slogans, and good overall condition, This WWII Yosegaki Hinomaru flag carries a combination of patriotic slogans and personal signatures from the soldier’s friends, family, and community. Here’s a breakdown of the key inscriptions visible in the image: Main Large Inscriptions (Bold Brushstrokes) 武運長久 (Buun Chōkyū) – “Eternal Fortune in War” This is the most common large slogan on such flags, expressing the wish for the soldier’s continued success and good luck in battle. 祈必勝 (Inori Hisshō) – “Prayers for Certain Victory” A strong, confident expression of hope for the soldier’s victory. Other Inscriptions Around the Red Sun Many smaller inscriptions are personal names—relatives, neighbors, classmates, or co-workers. Some also include short blessings, such as 必勝祈願 (Hisshō Kigan) – “Prayer for Certain Victory” 安全祈願 (Anzen Kigan) – “Prayer for Safety” Expressions of loyalty and encouragement like “Do your best” or “Fight bravely.” Purpose and Use The writing is all on one side, but the thin silk allows the ink to show through. This flag was likely presented to a soldier at a send-off gathering. It could have been flown at the farewell ceremony, then folded and carried inside the helmet liner or uniform for protection and morale.

D-Day Flag, 1940s, one of the first American flags flown on June 6th, 1944.
By United States Navy
Located in London, GB
An original, battle -scarred, 48 -star US flag from the minesweeper USS YMS -381, one of the first boats to start Operation Neptune. This flag is one of the rarest items from D -Day to ever surface. As the earliest flag from D -Day, it would have been one of the very first the Germans saw on that momentous day, signalling the impending invasion. Uniquely, this flag comes with provenance that directly links it back to the Normandy Beaches, supported by a customs slip and an address label to New York City. What makes this flag even more extraordinary is its completeness - many D -Day flags have been found in tatters, yet this one remains intact, representing the start of D -Day in its entirety. No flag earlier in the mission is likely to surface, making this one of the most historic flags to emerge from this pivotal moment in history and the earliest flag from D-Day a collector could have. More than just a symbol, this flag embodies the courage and sacrifice of the D-Day mission - an irreplaceable artifact of history Flown on USS-YMS-381, one of the first vessels to enter the assault channels at Utah Beach on D-Day, this battle-worn, 48-star U.S. flag is a rare and significant piece of military history. Its provenance sets it apart: it is the earliest known American flag from D-Day to ever surface, and uniquely, it is the only flag flown from a minesweeper vessel to ever surface for sale. This makes it an artifact unlike any other, with historical weight far beyond its fabric. The flag comes with customs documentation that traces its origin directly to the Normandy beaches, where Captain William Beckham sent it home in September 1944. This direct link to the events of June 6, 1944—when the flag was among the first to be seen by German forces—is confirmed through careful research and verification. As one of the first flags to fly on the French coast during the D-Day landings, it was part of the early waves of vessels involved in Operation Neptune, the maritime portion of the broader Operation Overlord. In addition to its extraordinary provenance, this flag is in remarkable condition for its age and use. With metal grommets and a 30-inch masthead, the flag bears the faintly visible stamp “US Ensign,” further confirming its military authenticity. It was mailed back to a recipient in Tarrytown, NY, in September 1944, accompanied by its original signed U.S. Customs Declaration...
