A beautiful original pair of early 20th-century photogravures documenting colonial Medan in the Deli region of Sumatra (Indonesia), published circa 1900 by G.R. Lambert
Co., the renowned photography studio active in Singapore, Batavia, and Medan.
The upper image depicts the prestigious White Club, an exclusive social institution for European residents during the height of the Deli tobacco boom. Its elegant architecture, spacious verandas, and garden setting illustrate the prosperity and status of colonial society in Medan.
The lower image shows the well-known Restaurant de Boer, a celebrated gathering place for international traders, planters, and travelers. Its refined façade and lush surroundings represent the sophistication and development of Medan at the time.
These are high-quality photogravures, as issued with their original printed captions in German, Dutch, and English. They remain mounted on their original card backing and present an important visual record of the Dutch East Indies during a period of rapid modernization and commercial growth.
