This rare matched pair of Aruba landscape views was published in 1888 as part of Karl Martin’s important scientific expedition work Bericht über eine Reise nach Niederländisch West-Indien, issued by the prestigious academic publisher E. J. Brill in Leiden. Karl Martin, Professor of Geology at the University of Leiden, documented not only geological formations but also produced a remarkable visual record of the natural landscapes of the Dutch Caribbean during the late 19th century.
The first plate (Tab. XV) depicts a dry, rocky valley landscape framed by low mountain slopes, desert vegetation, and clusters of cactus and shrubs. Palm trees rise in the middle distance, while geological rock formations dominate the scene, emphasizing the arid yet luxuriant contrast that characterizes much of Aruba’s interior terrain. The composition reflects both the island’s volcanic history and its distinctive semi-desert ecology.
The second plate (Tab. XVI) presents a sweeping panoramic coastal view dominated by a dramatic mountain rising from the surrounding plains. A gently curving shoreline with small waves, sparse trees, and cactus plants in the foreground creates a layered sense of depth, while the massive mountain in the background forms a powerful focal point. The soft atmospheric rendering conveys both scale and isolation, capturing the island’s rugged natural beauty at a time long before modern development.
Executed in finely detailed lithography with subtle hand tinting in warm sepia and golden tones, these two plates balance scientific observation with Romantic landscape aesthetics. Together they form a visually harmonious diptych depicting both the inland and coastal character of Aruba in the late 19th century.
Historically, these views belong to the most important period of Dutch scientific documentation of the ABC Islands. They reflect the era when European expeditions sought to systematically record geology, topography, vegetation, and climate in the Caribbean. Today, original landscape views of Aruba from this period are scarce and highly sought after by collectors of Caribbean art, Dutch colonial history, exploration imagery, and museum-grade wall material.
This matched pair displays beautifully as a horizontal diptych and also pairs exceptionally well with Martin’s geological maps of Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire as part of a cohesive ABC Islands wall presentation.
Condition Report
Both original lithographs are in very good antique condition. Even overall age toning consistent with late 19th-century paper. Light scattered foxing, mainly confined to the outer margins. Images remain clean and well preserved with strong clarity. No losses, no restorations, and no structural damage. Original margins intact.
Framing Tips
These plates frame beautifully as a matching pair in dark walnut, matte black, or antique gold frames with soft ivory or warm sand-tone museum mats. For a contemporary interior, they can also be floated in deep shadow-box frames to reveal the full paper edges. Especially striking in coastal interiors, libraries, studies, and curated Caribbean-themed wall displays.
