About the Item

Aruba Petroglyph Symbols Fontein Cave Ethnographic Plate by Karl Martin 1887 This rare and highly intriguing ethnographic plate illustrates a collection of indigenous petroglyph drawings from the island of Aruba and was published in 1888 by Karl Martin as part of his celebrated work Westindische Skizzen. Identified as “Tab. XIV.”, the plate documents a remarkable series of native rock carvings and symbolic drawings believed to originate from sites such as the Fontein Cave, one of Aruba’s most important archaeological and cultural locations. The plate presents a carefully arranged series of numbered symbols, human-like figures, abstract signs, geometric forms, and organic motifs, each recorded with scientific precision. The imagery includes spirals, linear patterns, cross-like figures, anthropomorphic forms, shield-like shapes, and a stylized tree, offering a rare visual inventory of the symbolic language used by Aruba’s indigenous inhabitants prior to European colonization. These petroglyphs are understood to be expressions of spiritual, ritual, or communicative meaning, carved into cave walls and rock surfaces by the island’s early native cultures. Karl Martin’s documentation preserves these fragile cultural traces at a critical moment in history, when European scientific expeditions aimed to systematically record disappearing indigenous traditions across the Dutch Caribbean. Executed as a finely detailed lithographic plate, the composition reflects the academic rigor of late 19th-century ethnographic research. The balanced arrangement and clarity of line give the sheet strong decorative impact while retaining its scholarly importance. As such, this work appeals equally to collectors of indigenous art, Caribbean archaeology, early anthropology, and Dutch colonial exploration material. Original plates documenting Aruba petroglyphs are exceptionally scarce on the market and are sought after by museums, academic institutions, and private collectors focused on Caribbean heritage, pre-Columbian symbolism, and ethnographic science. Condition Report Original lithograph in very good antique condition. Even overall age toning consistent with late 19th-century paper. Minor scattered foxing, primarily confined to the outer margins. The image area remains clean with strong contrast and clarity. No losses, no repairs, and no structural damage observed. Framing Tips This plate frames beautifully in dark walnut, matte black, or brushed bronze frames with a soft ivory or light sand-tone museum mat. For a contemporary presentation, it can be floated in a deep shadow-box frame to reveal the full sheet edges. Especially effective in studies, libraries, museum-style interiors, and curated exploration or archaeology-themed wall displays.
