About the Item

Batak Kampong Village, Sumatra — Kleingrothe Photogravure c.1900 Original photogravure showing a Batak kampong (village) in the highlands of North Sumatra, photographed by C. J. Kleingrothe in Medan, circa 1900. This historic view documents traditional Batak architecture with steeply pitched roofs, surrounded by dense tropical forest, capturing a community scene before widespread industrial development reached the region. Kleingrothe was one of the most respected photographers working in the Netherlands East Indies, and his prints are an important visual record of Indonesian cultural and colonial history. The printed captions beneath the image appear in three languages, indicating its intended use for an international audience: “Bataks kampong / Roema Kampong / Kampong”. Printed on thick paper with wide margins and retaining the original plate mark. A desirable piece for collectors of Sumatra, Indonesian ethnography, or early 20th-century photography. Condition: Very good for age. Light foxing and small handling marks in the wide margins. Image area clean with strong tonal range. Visible plate mark. Framing tips: Best displayed in a dark hardwood frame such as walnut or teak with an off-white or natural linen mat to complement the photograph’s warm sepia tones. A black gallery frame can provide a more contemporary presentation. Technique: Photogravure Maker: C. J. Kleingrothe, Medan, circa 1900
