Kingdom of the Two Sicilies Map – Southern Italy and Sicily 1857 This detailed antique print shows the “Königreich Beider Sicilien nebst dem südlichen Theile des Kirchenstaats” meaning “Kingdom of the Two Sicilies with the southern part of the Papal States.” Published in 1857 by Justus Perthes in Gotha as part of Adolf Stieler’s renowned Hand-Atlas, this map was drawn and engraved by F. v. Stülpnagel. The map covers Southern Italy from Naples down to Calabria, including the island of Sicily in full and an inset of Malta and Gozo. It features provinces such as Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, and Apulia, alongside Sicily’s regions, major cities, roads, rivers, and mountain ranges. Notable cities include Naples, Palermo, Messina, Catania, and Taranto. Islands such as the Lipari group are also clearly shown. This map is significant as it depicts the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies shortly before Italian unification in 1861. At this time, the kingdom was a prominent independent state under Bourbon rule, making the map valuable for historical studies of pre-unification Italy, regional governance, and economic geography of the period. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand colouring used to delineate provincial and territorial boundaries in subtle yet clear hues. German titles and extensive annotations are engraved with clarity and precision characteristic of Stieler’s atlases.
