Medan Hotel, Antique Photogravure of Colonial Indonesia, c.1900
A rare and elegant early twentieth century photogravure depicting the Medan Hotel in North Sumatra during the Dutch East Indies colonial era. This historic hotel was one of the most prominent and prestigious hospitality establishments in Medan, serving travelers, planters and international guests during the economic boom driven by tobacco and plantation industries. The image captures the grand architecture surrounded by lush tropical landscaping and a curved driveway, conveying the refined atmosphere of the colonial capital.
This finely printed and richly toned photogravure was produced by C. J. Kleingrothe, the renowned German photographer based in Medan who documented the rapid development of Sumatra around 1900. His works are now highly sought after for their cultural and historical significance.
The large format, wide margins and excellent visual depth make this a highly decorative statement piece. An exceptional addition for collectors of Dutch East Indies history, Southeast Asian photography, and early travel and architectural imagery. Ready for framing and display.
