About the Item
Antique print, titled: 'Amara in Africa.'
Caption above the image reads: 'Ex bello Pax' (From War comes Peace). A lance is used as a roost for chickens. In the background the city Amara in Africa.
From: 'Thesauri Philo-Politici' / 'Thesaurus Philopoliticus' / 'Politisches Schatzkastleins'. This work was originally created in the period 1623-1632 and consisted of 16 parts, first published separately and then together in 2 books of 8 parts ea. Altogether it had 830 prints. Later editions were published in 1637-1638 by Paul Furst (titled 'Sciographia Cormica') and in 1678 by his widow (titled:'Sciagraphia Cosmica'). Complete editions are scarse. The primary objective was the poetry and accompanying emblems with a moralising symbolism. The city views were secondary and mainly served for decoration. There is no particular tie between the poetry and the city. The city views were mostly engraved after popular engravings at the time from the works of Guicciardini, Braun/Hogenberg, Munster and others. The Poetry consists of a aphorism or theme in German or Latin at the top, a 2 line relating poem in Latin below the image and a 4 line relating poem in German below. In the engravings there is always a foreground which illustrates the theme and a city view in the background.
Artists and Engravers: Authors: Daniel Meisner and Eberhart Kieser. The authors of this work are Daniel Meisner (1585-1625) and Eberhart Kieser (1583-1631). Meisner was a Bohemian / German poet. Kieser a German publisher and engraver. Kieser probably engraved some of the plates himself , but he also used other well known engravers: Sebastian Furck, Georg Keller, Johann Eckard Loffler and Matthias Merian the elder.

Attractive Antique Map of Western Africa with Lots of Details on the Coast, 1655
Located in Langweer, NL
Handsome map of Western Africa filled with information, much of it spurious, in the Sahara Desert, the Niger River and the coast of Guinea. Of particular interest are several incomplete rivers in the desert regions that appear and then disappear. The map is beautifully engraved with a title cartouche fashioned in the form of an oriental carpet.
The map shows a fantastic level of detail near the coastlines, which extends into legend and Ptolemaic myth in the interior of the continent. Detail is particularly extensive in Guinea and the Gold and Ivory Coasts. The Niger River is traced to its Malian lakes. The Mediterranean is barely visible in the northern part of the map. This map incorporates the discoveries made by Samuel Blommaert, who was director of the Dutch West Indies Company, in addition to traveling extensively to Africa and settling the oldest land deed...

Antique Map of Africa with a Decorative Dedication to the Dauphin, 1717
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique map titled 'L'Afrique, Dressée Selon les Dernieres Relat. et Suivant les Nouvelles Decouvertes (..).'
This map is a reduced derivative of De Fer's wall map of Africa (1696-98) with its characteristic thickened west coast. Unusual islands appear in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans including a mythical second island of St. Helena. Monomotapa is shown in the south and the southwest coastline is distorted and there is an incorrect placement and shape of the Cape of Good Hope. In Central Africa is a paragraph concerning the origin of the Nile in Abyssinia, however, the two sub-equatorial Ptolemaic lakes are still shown on the map. The map is graced with a decorative dedication to the Dauphin and a title cartouche featuring lime kilns. The map was first published in 1700. This scarse map originates from: 'Introduction a la geographie - avec unde description historique sur toutes...
