Filling Operations — Kleingrothe Photogravure, Sumatra c.1900
This original photogravure by Carl Josef Kleingrothe presents a rare and highly atmospheric view into the early industrial petroleum operations in East Sumatra around 1900. The composition is divided into two images: above, a bustling interior of a tin fabrication workshop where workers — primarily local Indonesian laborers — operate heavy stamping machinery to produce containers for petroleum export. Below, a wide view across a filling section where refinery workers prepare and organize rows of square tin cans destined for shipment throughout the Dutch East Indies and beyond.
Kleingrothe was the most prominent photographer working in colonial-era Sumatra, celebrated for documenting the rapid economic expansion driven by oil, tobacco, rubber, and coffee. Commissioned by powerful plantation and industrial companies, his work illustrates a pivotal moment in Southeast Asian history, when global demand for petroleum transformed Medan and its surrounding districts into one of the world’s fastest-growing commercial hubs.
This particular print emphasizes both the technological progress of the period and the human labor behind it, offering an important record of early industrial manufacturing in Indonesia. The strong tonal range and exceptional detail — especially notable in the machinery and brick architecture — showcase the quality of the photogravure printing technique executed by J.B. Obernetter in Munich.

Condition: Good for age. Soft age toning, occasional minor surface spots and faint handling marks in the margins. Image itself very well preserved with excellent contrast. Wide original margins retained.
Framing Tips: A warm-toned wood frame or simple black gallery frame complements the industrial subject matter. A cream or off-white mat will highlight the soft tones of the photogravure while preserving the full margins.
