About the Item

Promised Land of Canaan – Antique Map of Israel with Biblical Scenes, van Jagen This remarkable antique map titled Het beloofde landt Canaan doorwandelt van onsen Saligmaker Jesu Christo neffens zyne Apostelen presents a richly detailed and visually compelling depiction of the Holy Land, as traversed by Jesus Christ and his apostles. Published in the 17th century and engraved by J. van Jagen, this work stands out for its powerful fusion of geography and religious iconography, characteristic of Dutch cartographic artistry of the time. The map represents the ancient land of Canaan—modern-day Israel and Palestine—filled with an extraordinary number of biblical references and locations. At its core is a sacred geography, tracing the paths and presence of Christ throughout his ministry. A compass rose positioned in the top right corner orients the map with north to the right, in keeping with the cartographic conventions of the era. One of the map’s most striking features is the lavish decorative title cartouche that spans the bottom. It is flanked by the Four Evangelists—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—and encircled by finely engraved vignettes from the life of Jesus. These include the Nativity, the Crucifixion, and a powerful Resurrection scene in which Christ triumphantly rises from the tomb, scattering Roman soldiers in dramatic fashion. The map is a masterwork of visual storytelling, integrating religious devotion with topographic information in a way that was meant to educate and inspire. Each element—from cities and rivers to mountains and battle scenes—is carefully engraved and labeled in Dutch. The style and technique suggest a strong influence from the Amsterdam school of mapmaking, where theological and historical themes were often woven into cartographic works. Condition report: Excellent impression with wide margins and only faint toning. Minor foxing in the margins, but the plate area is clean and sharply struck. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: This piece is well suited to an ornate gold frame with a charcoal or deep grey mat to enhance the drama of the biblical scenes. A museum-grade non-reflective glass will preserve and highlight its intricate detail.

La Terre Sainte, The Holy Land, Tiree Des Memoires De M.De.La Rue. Par N. de Fer. Geographe de Sa Majeste Catoliq et de Monseigneur le Dauphin. Avec Privil du Roi 1703 Detailed map of the Holy Land from Nicholas de Fer's L'Atlas Curieux ou le Monde. East is oriented at the top. MAKER Nicolas de Fer 1646-1720 The French cartographer and engraver, Nicolas de Fer, was a master at creating maps that were works of art. The maps that he published were printed during the Baroque period when the decorative arts were characterized by ornate detail. De Fer’s detailed maps and atlases were valued more for their decorative content than their geographical accuracy. Nicolas de Fer was born in 1646. His father, Antoine de Fer, owned a mapmaking firm. At the age of twelve, Nicolas was apprenticed to a Parisian engraver named Louis Spirinx. The family business was starting to decline when his father died in 1673. Nicolas de Fer’s mother, Genevieve, took over the business after the death of her husband. In 1687 the business was passed on to Nicolas and the profits increased after he took over the firm. Nicolas de Fer was a prolific cartographer who produced atlases and hundreds of single maps. He eventually became the official geographer to King Louis XIV of France and King Philip V...
