About the Item
Stabat Government Bridge
Forest Road – Kleingrothe Photogravure c.1900
This original early 20th-century photogravure sheet features two historically valuable views from Stabat, North Sumatra, produced by the celebrated German photographer C.J. Kleingrothe in Medan. His images of the Deli region are among the most important visual records of the colonial era in Sumatra, capturing both rapid infrastructure development and the vanishing original landscape.
The upper image depicts the Governmentsbrug (Government Bridge) at Stabat — a striking engineered steel structure spanning a calm tropical river, bordered by dense palms and plantation vegetation. Bridges such as this represented a new era of controlled mobility and access across the plantation districts, linking tobacco, rubber, and oil production sites to ports and administrative centers.
The lower image provides a stark visual counterpoint: a newly-cut road through virgin rainforest, with freshly felled trunks and a narrow dirt track winding into the wilderness. The scene documents the expansion of colonial transport routes deep into unexploited land, a direct reflection of the growing demands of plantation agriculture. The contrast between the mechanical bridge above and the raw extraction below underscores a transition in Sumatra’s cultural and environmental history.
The photogravure printing, executed by J.B. Obernetter, Munich, displays rich tonal depth and fine detail, characteristic of Kleingrothe’s renowned quality. This plate was originally issued in the scarce promotional atlas “Sumatra’s O.K.”, prepared for influential Deli plantation companies at the turn of the century. A significant collectible for those interested in Indonesian history, industrial heritage, and early documentary photography.
Condition: Very good overall. Sheet exhibits scattered margin foxing, light toning, and gentle handling marks. Image areas clean and well-preserved. Strong original impression and visible plate marks.
Framing tips: A warm off-white mount suits the soft gravure tones beautifully. A dark teak or walnut frame pairs well with the tropical subject matter and period aesthetic.
Technique: Photogravure
