This rare antique religious work / object of art, circa 1750, most likely commissioned by the Catholic Church of Spain, destined to be prominently displayed as an altarpiece / retablo or as part of a much larger reredo, directly behind the main altar at a Spanish or Continental European Catholic Church (French, Italian, Iberian, Portuguese)
The Crucified Christ, displayed mounted on a later faded red fabric upholstered shaped backboard plaque with textured gilt border. The exceptional hand sculpted, carved, gessoed, polychrome painted figure depicting bloodied Jesus, with crown of thorns atop his head, only wearing a undulating shaped cloth around his loin, arms extended and feet crossed, spear head form iron nails through both. The verso covered in an old paper printed backing with metal hook hardware at top for wall hanging.

The smooth faced lofting iron is heavy weighted, hickory shafted with crisp nicking to the top of the hosel where it meets the shaft. It is with leather sheep skin grip, the back of the iron club head stamped 'W. Wilson, Maker, St. Andrews'. The patina of the metal head is very attractive to collectors. Willie Wilson was one of the early ironmakers who produced fine clubs during the late 19th century.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
Willie Wilson of St Andrews was a well-known Scottish golf clubmaker. He began making irons in the 1860's and remained in business to the end of the century. He was among one of the most respected craftsmen in St Andrews, the "Home of Golf".

Scottish Lignum Vitae Carpet/Lawn Ball II

This a good example of a 19th century Scottish Lignum vitae carpet or lawn ball. Lignum Vitae is one of the hardest woods and has always been the wood of choice for carpet, lawn and bocce balls. The ball is detailed with the inlaid engraved bone initials "SA" at one side and a bone circle a the other. The stand can be exchanged for a shorter stand.
