About the Item
1950s scale model of an early 1900s Bermudian sloop. Measurements: 67.5 x 10 x 60 cm (26.6 x 3.9 x 23.6 in) The model, made of wood with cotton sails, represents a sloop with a Bermudian rig, equipped with a single mast, a triangular mainsail and a bow jib. This type of armor, the most common today, was a revolutionary innovation in the early 1900s. The hull is sleek, with elegant stern and long fixed keel. The triangular mainsail is mounted on a thin mast and flanked by a single headsail.
This type of boat originated in Bermuda in the 17th century and was later perfected between 1910 and 1930, particularly by British and American designers. The Bermudian rig offered better aerodynamics, reduced weight, and more ease of maneuvering; for these reasons, between 1920 and 1940, it gradually replaced traditional arms in racing and pleasure sailboats, marking the transition from vintage to modern sailing. It became the base for all post-World War II pleasure sailboats.
