About the Item
1890s-1910s; J. W. Wilson's Swing Seat, Manchester, NH.
In the late 1800s, drivers of wagons and heavy carriages known as "drays" had a problem, and this wooden salesman sample seat provided a solution. John W. Wilson explains his invention in his patent for 'Swing Seat for Drays' on April 7, 1898, starting at line 12, "Drivers of heavy trucks and wagon experience much annoyance and often suffer injury from the severe shock encountered in driving over roughly-paved streets or those which are out of repair. The vertical motion can be easily overcome by setting the seat on springs; but the most trying of these shocks which the driver of such vehicles must necessarily endure are the severe lateral jars, which in some instances seriously effect the kidneys and other internal organs."
