About the Item

Early 20th century nephrite, diamond and enamel frog-shaped cane Continental, c. 1900 Height 81cm, width 7cm, depth 2.5cm Crafted around 1900, this delicate walking stick is filled with a plethora of symbols and intricate details synonymous with the Art Nouveau style. This exquisite walking stick features a nephrite handle, expertly carved to depict a delightful frog perched on a flower. The frog’s hind legs curl around the stem, while its head rises above, framed by the forward-curving flower that forms the handle. Remarkable attention to detail is showcased in the frog’s anatomy and the intricate depiction of the surrounding flowers. Revered for its association with health and prosperity, nephrite shares symbolic ties with frogs, which are often seen as symbols of wealth and good fortune, adding layers of meaning to this beautiful antique. The handle is accentuated by a soft cream-colored enamel band, bordered by two gleaming rows of diamonds, elevating the piece with a touch of opulence. The elegant hardwood shaft is finished with a brass-toned ferrule. Canes featuring such ornate handles, like this stunning example from Mayfair Gallery’s collection, were often crafted primarily for decorative purposes. Their intricate craftsmanship and captivating design make them highly sought after by collectors, making this antique particularly valuable.
