About the Item

A fantastic 19th Century model of the Royal Mail Steam Ship 'Himalaya'. This stunning piece is beautifully crafted with exqusite detail, labelled 'The Model Of The Royal Steam Ship 'Himalaya' by 'Himalaya' by Triggs, Maritime Architect and is housed in a well figured, moulded and finely carved mahogany and glass fronted display case with gorgeous patination, grain and features an architectural pediment, fluted fan detail and is flanked with a pair of shaped side pillar supports, terminating on moulded platform base. The Royal Mail Steam Ship 'Himalaya' was ordered by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) and laid down at the yard of C. J. Mare Co., Leamouth, London in November 1851 as an iron paddle steamer, it was at the time the largest ship in the world belonging to the P&O Steam Navigation Company and was built by C. J. Mare, Blackwall, the engines were by Penn Son, Greenwich. Mahogany Type: ‘Santos Mahogany’
