About the Item

Miniature Shoe with little Bird Origin: Probably France or Belgium Material: Gilt bronze Date: Late 19th century (c. 1880–1900) Dimensions: H × W × D: 5 × 8 x 3 cm Description: Solid cast miniature shoe in the shape of a traditional Dutch wooden clog (klompen), made of gilt bronze. The opening is irregularly jagged and features relief-like textures reminiscent of feathers or foliage. A finely modelled small bird—possibly a sparrow or chick—sits atop the instep, with delicately rendered details such as wings, eyes, and feet. The interior is darkly patinated, with a sooty appearance, possibly indicating previous use (e.g. as a paperweight or match holder). Interesting Facts: Such small bronze objects were highly popular in the late 19th century as decorative desk accessories. The combination of animal motif and everyday object reflects the influence of French naturalism, as seen in the work of sculptors like Jules Moigniez or Ferdinand Pautrot. The shoe form may allude to rural or pastoral themes and could have originated in a sentimental or touristic context (e.g. souvenir). Condition: Gilding partly rubbed, with signs of age and use (scratches, patina), especially on the base and interior. No cracks or breaks.
