A magnificent antique Spanish Colonial Medieval High Renaissance style hand-crafted coach chariot - luxurious horse drawn carriage model. Born in the late 18th / early 19th century, likely Northern Mexico (New Spain), New Mexico or Texas, handmade by Spanish settlers / colonists, the exceptionally executed one-of-a-kind primitive folk art work features hand carved, painted and sculpted wood and clay construction, intricately detailed, with ornate polychrome and parcel gilt ornamentation. Provenance / Acquisition: Property from the Majestic Theatre Penthouse, Downtown San Antonio, Texas The Majestic Theatre is San Antonio's oldest and largest atmospheric theatre. The theatre seats 2,264 people, designed in Spanish Renaissance style and built by renowned Art Deco period architect John Eberson, for Karl Hoblitzelle's Interstate Theatres in 1929. Intended to be the most modern building in South Texas and the first theater in the United States to be air-conditioned, for many years it remained the largest theatre in Texas and the second largest movie theatre in the United States. Unbeknownst to many of its patrons, who gawk at the rich interior of San Antonio’s oldest theater as they take in a performance at the Majestic Theatre, sitting atop the historic structure is a three-story, 3,500-square-foot penthouse apartment that evokes ‘Old Hollywood Glamour’ for many years it was occupied by a wealthy tenant who threw lavish, extravagant parties attended by the city’s elite. That man, whose identity remains concealed moved out in recent years, leaving behind a collection of high-end vintage furnishings as well as Spanish and Mexican art. The opulent penthouse estate has been highly sought after by folk art and antique collectors. The penthouse apartment, appraised at $3.2 million in 2019 by the Bexar Appraisal District, was built in 1929 along with the theater. Original furniture, lighting, serving pieces, silverware, and religious artifacts and decorative items such as this carriage that was featured during the opening of the theater ninety years ago were prominent pieces of the collection, all belonging to one wealthy estate owner who lived in the penthouse for nine years and amassed the holdings. Acquired from the highly reputable auction house Vogt Auctioneers, San Antonio, Texas Dimensions (approx): 8" tall x 15" wide x 6" deep Condition: A scarce museum quality example, in overall good antique condition, especially considering its age and delicate nature of folk art. Beautifully aged warm rustic distressed patina. Wear consistent with age and indicative of use, including old touchups and losses throughout. As photographed. Presents very well. MUSEUM PERFECTION ! AZTEC INFLUENCED LATIN AMERICAN COLONIAL ART AMAZINGLY RARE PIECE ! Approx. 14" x 8" x 2 1/2" After Hernán Cortés conquered the Aztec empire, painting and sculpture schools were set up within missions to produce art for Roman Catholic worship in Spanish America to promote Christian evangelization. The works that emerge from this period are great historic treasures and tell us much about this time in history. Icons were important in this conversion process. Here is an Imagene that was likely employed in a church from the 17th century. It features 5 elaborately carved faces and figures depicting angels and saints. This piece is magnificent for many reasons, but the most important reason is that this piece illustrates the bridge between the Spanish and Aztec art schools. The Aztecs had developed the most splendid feather art in the world. Feather mosaics (arte plumario in Spanish, amantecayotl in Nahuatl), were created by specially trained and talented Aztec nobles. The blue green iridescent color of hummingbird feathers had made them a regular form of tribute to Aztec rulers and art that featured these feathers were incomparable. The Spanish art instructors adopted feathers into traditional Catholic imagery and this piece shows the result of such hybrid. Here feathers are prominently sculpted into the background and were polychromed with sensational hues to reflect the native love and cultural appreciation for feather art. Few feather mosaics survive because of their temporal frailty, but the wood worked feathers in this piece give scholars and collectors a lasting indication of how Aztecs stylistically used the feathers in their pieces. Aztec religious leaders wore headdresses and garments made of feathers - and here these saints appear to be wearing feather headdresses! Even after centuries, the colors of this piece are incredibly compelling. Fragments of the rich blue green pigment that was applied to mimic the hummingbird feathers are still present. The golds, yellows and browns display spectacular understanding of complementary colors. What's more this piece also shows Aztec sun imagery incorporated into the design! On the reverse side of the Saints' faces we see a vivid blue sun burst type design which clearly was an Aztec motif of the period and has no comparable counterpart in Catholic holy treasures...

A magnificent rustic Spanish Colonial antique, circa 1725, church altar with remarkable patina and detailing. Hand-crafted in the first half of the 18th century, most likely commissioned by the Spanish Empire for use in a Colonial religious Mission, now fashioned with later antique elements and repurposed for use as a sideboard. The scarce Baroque period ecclesiastical architectural church altar presents with a raised gallery shelf back topped with a single board, over a massive, thick pine plank wooden slab top, featuring impressive rich patina, rustic charm and antique character. Mounted over the distinctive architectural trapezoid shaped molded base with rich hand carved and polychrome painted decoration, including the sophisticated original Italian / European inspired trompe-l'œil marbleizing finish, which was a variety of faux painting techniques used only by highly skilled artisans to create the distinctive and varied patterns of marble, in an effort to reproduce the colors, veining and luster of real marble or other building materials. Rising on solid supports enhanced with recessed paneling, smooth rounded corners and edge work and stepped molded trim. Beautiful, nicely aged patina over the whole, highly desirable heavily worn, naturally distressed, chippy paint craquelure finish that has been stabilized to minimize further loss, that does not detect from the aesthetics or functionality, but only adds to the overall elegant warmth and rich historical depth, that can only be acquired over three centuries. Very strong, sturdy, stable. Delivered cleaned, hand waxed, luminous polished French patina finish, ready for immediate use, and many more years of generational enjoyment.
