About the Item

A large and fantastic-sounding buffet-style upright antique music box made by Mojon Manger of Geneva, Switzerland, c. 1885. The movement features six saucer bells and a skin drum mounted above the cylinder. Both the drum and the bells can be disengaged and re-engaged at will using the levers beneath the comb. The movement also features a double spring for longer playing time between winds. The upright arrangement of the movement makes this box rare and rather special. The music box plays twelve popular tunes of the day as detailed on the original tunesheet. These include Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Bizet’s Carmen, The Mikado, and Pirates of Penzance by Sullivan. Please message us if you would like a link to a video to hear the music box playing with sound. This is all housed in a superb inlaid burr walnut case, mounted on an ebonised plinth with brass and mother-of-pearl cartouches to the front of both doors, along with gilt bronze carrying handles. It also retain its key for locking the music box. A stunning example.
