About the Item

This Regency Broadwood is a fine example of a pretty square piano. The mahogany cabinet is accented with a black and white harlequin stringing border. The entire cabinet has been finely hand-painted in a variety of Neoclassical motifs. The top lid features hand-painted roses, a beehive, acanthus, interlacing C-scrolls and fluttering ribbons. Scrolling acanthus leaves, roses and a lyre surround the key escutcheon on the cabinet side. The left piano cheek features a satinwood panel hand-painted with flowers. A satinwood panel bears the makers name featuring carved, openwork panels backed in pink fabric. Piano has an seventy-eight note keyboard. Piano has four turned, tapered legs with gilt and black ornament and cup casters. Square Pianos Square pianos, popular from the mid-18th to the early 19th century, were an ingenious compromise between harpsichords and the larger grand pianos, designed to fit into modest European homes. It was affordable, compact, and versatile, making it a symbol of domestic music-making during the Georgian and Regency periods.
