Drums are among the most important art forms in Africa, used both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture significant in many ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, story-telling and communication of messages.
The head on this drum is in amazing original condition,as well as the hand carved body of the drum itself. There is a stick attached to the head that can be held, touched, etc. from the bottom. Not playable traditionally but strange rythmic,animal sounds could be made by stroking the stick and applying pressure to skin in a certain way. The name cuica is from S. America.
