About the Item
Mid-Century Modern style, 1956, Monington and Weston upright piano. Cabinet made from a contrasting mahogany and macassar ebony case. Piano exemplifies clean simple lines. Rectangular cabinet has strong geometric proportions, emphasised by square piano cheeks. Legs are slim rods tapering at the end with a brass finial. Pedals are a simple rounded, flat brass plate. Piano has an eighty-five note keyboard and two pedals.
Mid Century Modern or MCM
MCM was popular from roughly 1945 to 1969. Mid Century Modern design evolved in response to a post War II envirnonment. Designers and architects werre eager to develop new ideas that married mass production and technology with a more optimistic look of the future.
The MCM design aesthetic is modern in style and construction, aligned with the Modernist movement of the period. It is typically characterized by clean, simple, geometric or curved lines and honest use of materials, and it generally does not include decorative embellishments. Wood, metal, glass and vinyl used in tension to create a unique look. The mid-century look is all about stripping items down to their barest elements and letting their function stand out.
Whilst focussing on simplistic shapes, a second layer of visual interest is often added incorporating bold pops of color to make a piece stand out in a room.
