About the Item

This 1893, Pleyel grand piano sits on ornately carved french walnut frame, carved with foliage and flowers. The piano has six carved, cabriole legs with scroll feet. Each square piano cheek features a hand-painted, carved fish. The lid lock features a carved lion head. The entire cabinet is hand-painted in Berainesque style. The cabinet is signed by G. Meunier. Berainesque style Jean I Berain was a key figure in developing the decorative French Court Style under Louis XIV. His decorative designs were highly influential providing templates from which other craftsmen and artists worked. His arabesque and grotesque ornament combine fantastic iconography and exoticism signalling a transition from the grandiose and heavy Baroque to lighter more florid Rococo style. Although related to the Renaissance Grotteschi, his figures lost the more muscular and sinister qualities inherited from 16th century designs. The piano cabinet features fragile architectural constructions framing central statues of Pan or nudes. Colourfully attired figures such as animal tamers, dancers characters from the Commedia dell Arte also feature. Typical motifs of mythical creatures, birds, flowers, swags, scrolls, acanthus and crested composers names also adorn the cabinet. Berain's Singerie (monkeys) feature here and are illustrative of a new design element to become highly fashionable during the Rococo period. G. Meunier Georges Meunier (1869 - 1942) was an eminent french poster artist. He worked under Cheret at the Chaix print house in Paris where he produced more than 50 original posters advertising products and Parisian events. His works are now considered iconic and reflect a golden era of french poster art Instrument has been sympathetically restored. Cabinet has been left untouched.

Pleyel Grand Piano, Paris 1870
By Pleyel
Located in Littleton, CO
This Pleyel concert grand piano crafted in Paris in 1870 is a timeless masterpiece that embodies the elegance and craftsmanship of 19th-century French piano manufacturing. Pleyel instruments are renowned for their exceptional quality and rich musicality, representing the pinnacle of piano design in the Romantic era, and this piano – an early example of the technological innovation of cross-stringing that was burgeoning during the period – is one in a series of only six ever produced. This piano is in extraordinarily immaculate condition with nearly every original part, including the soundboard, pristine ivory keys, and the brass inlay in its beautifully figured walnut cabinet. Candle stands slide forward on either side of the collapsable music desk. This piano was first purchased by the French Count Charles Étienne Gustave Le Clerc, count of Juigné (1825-1900), one of the wealthiest landowners in Brittany and a member of the French National Assembly, later a member of the House of Representatives, and in late life, the Senate. The piano was restored in 1997 at Maison Erard by master restorationist Frits Janmaat in Amsterdam, and later conditioned by Edwin Beunk. In recent years, some of Europe's finest historically-informed musical artists played this Pleyel in PBS concert performances in collaboration with the late Sergiu Luca. Standing on substantial carved legs and brass wheels, the piano exudes a majestic presence through the graceful lines of its Second Empire style cabinet that embodies the period's aesthetics. The keyboard, meticulously crafted from ivory and ebony, is a testament to the attention to detail in every aspect. Its 85 keys...
