About the Item

Liquid compass on gimbal signed Ritchie Boston USA from the early 1900s, marketed by the company F.B. Harrisman of Chicago, the compass is mounted on a custom ona wooden board and brass base made to measure. Eight-wind rose complete with protractor circle mounted on a wooden board and made-to-measure ototne. The compass is made up of a cylindrical vessel in brass and bronze, called a mortar, on the bottom of which a hard metal stem is fixed, on which the wind rose is suitably constrained, so that the zero coincides with the magnetic polarity. To minimize friction, the mortar is filled with liquid with a low freezing point, also having the purpose of quickly dampening any oscillations of the complex and closed at the top by a sturdy protective glass. Table width cm 18.5 inch 7.3, compass diameter cm 13, inch 5.15, height cm 13 inch 5.15. Very good Condition. Ritchie began developing the first marine compass beginning with an order for 26 compasses from the US Navy in 1861. A model of Edward's first liquid-filled compass is on display in the Museum of Science in London. Having received numerous awards at US and world exhibitions, E.S. Ritchie continued his relentless innovation throughout the 20th century. Technologies developed during World War II made Ritchie compasses among the best in stability and accuracy. The first hints in Europe on the use of instruments using magnetic fields for orientation are dated back to the late twelfth century, especially thanks to the knowledge brought by merchants and sailors after contacts with the Arabs: we find hints in the work by Alexander Neckam "De nominibus utensilium" and in the works by Guyot de Provins, where the magnet is called "sailor's friend". Even the inventory of a Sicilian ship of 1200's, the San Nicolò, refers to the presence on board of a magnet and a "bussola di ligno", that is a wooden compass.

Pre World War I Nautical Compass by E.S.Ritchie Nautical compass mounted by a brass gimbal into a copper brass bound case with sloping glazed aperture with heavily bevelled glass. Flat brass bezel with five holding screws signed ‘E.S.Ritchie’ and numbered 5779. Side opening compartment for a lighted wick with drawer beneath. The compass is mounted in a heavy painted brass bowl with very fine copper pivot supporting the floating direction card. A diaphragm is located in the base of the bowl for temperature compensation. c.1910 E.S.Ritchie founded the business in 1850 to manufacture mechanical, electrical and scientific instruments. In 1857 he turned his attention to navigational instruments and begun making marine bearing compasses for the U.S.Navy before the American civil war. At the time the British admiralty dry mounted nautical compasses were considered by all navies and commercial shipping companies as the highest technological standard of the day, however, in 1860 Ritchie had received a US patent for the first successful and practical liquid-filled marine compass for general use.
