About the Item
A 19th Century oak and brass Royal Navy “The Queen God Bless Her” rum tub. This 19th-century Royal Navy oak and brass rum tub, inscribed with "The Queen God Bless Her," captures a piece of maritime history. Its tapering body and circular removable lid, adorned with a heavy brass acorn finial set on a star-shaped plate, reflect the craftsmanship of the era. Designed as a vessel for the ‘Royal Toast,’ this rum tub played a vital role in naval tradition, where sailors received their daily rum ration, a practice dating back to 1655. The rum was typically diluted with water in a copper or brass-bound tub before being distributed among the crew, a ritual maintained until Black Tot Day in 1970, when the daily rum issue was abolished.
This historic and rare piece, with its rich patina and maritime heritage, serves as a compelling decorative object for any home. Place it in a study, library, or living room to spark conversation about naval traditions and life at sea. With its bold lettering and robust construction, this rum tub embodies both the endurance and ceremony of the Royal Navy, adding a touch of nautical charm and historical intrigue to any setting. The body is 20.5" diameter and 24" at the widest.
