About the Item
A very cool and quite rare antique U.S. naval maritime brass telescope or spyglass made by Kelvin White
Hutton of London for the USS Cheyenne naval vessel, circa early 1900s. The telescope is in well worn condition with a great brass patina and measures 3.75"D x 31"L. #4781
There have been several United States naval vessels named USS Cheyenne. The telescope is likely from either BM-10 Arkansas-class monitor originally named "Wyoming", which was renamed in 1909 to Cheyenne. Or possibly a 1898 tugboat that was in service in 1898. Specifics include:
USS Cheyenne (tugboat)
• Service: Entered the U.S. Navy in 1898 as a converted tugboat.
• History: Served for some time before being decommissioned and eventually sold for scrap.
USS Cheyenne (monitor/tender)
• Original Name: Originally the monitor USS Wyoming (BM-10).
• Renaming: The ship was renamed Cheyenne in 1909 to free up the name "Wyoming" for a new battleship.
• Service: After being renamed, it was assigned to training duty for Naval Reserve Force personnel and was decommissioned in 1926.
• Towing: The tug Lykens (AT-56) towed the Cheyenne to Baltimore in 1916
Kelvin White
Hutton are listed as working at 11 Billiter Street, London from 1904 to 1937. The firm was founded by William Thompson who later became Lord Kelvin. At age 21 he was offered the Professorship of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, a post he held for 53 years. They specialized in maritime products.
