Antique Warship of Spanish Armada Vessel from Antiquités Delalande

About the Item

Purchased in the mid-1990s at a boutique at The galeries au Louvre des Antiquaires, place du Palais Royal, Paris from Antiquités Delalande who were (are) expert in all things maritime. This was a very special gift for the 65th birthday of my Dad. It is quite imposing and was displayed on a long commode behind his desk. He kept it in its *glass case , of wood at the base and ( originally ) a huge glass rectangular cover . The maquette is representative of one of the huge warships of the famously large armada of the 16th century made by the fanatical Catholic King ( Philip II ) of Spain to invade England in 1558 and overthrow and perhaps execute the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I . His luxurious ships were famously destroyed off the coast of England by the weaker English , who were helped by terrible winds that destroyed almost all of the great fleet. This turning point in euro-politics changed the balance of power during the reigns of both monarchs as Elizabeth , a mere woman , was now a warrior queen , and was secure on her throne until her death. Spain under Philip II and his descendants was , on the other hand , never to regain its long lasting imperial power in Europe and became weak . Since my Dad was a historian he loved this gift. The (original) glass cover eventually was damaged and we had a plexiglass cover made to replace it . The wood base /plexi cover adds to its size and diminishes the maquette's visibility . The size of the Navire/Ship is just about 61 w X 18 d X 38" T. The wood base and plexi cover measures 67 w X 24 d X 45" T. Please note that while the maquette is in very good condition with all its pieces intact and all its rigging rigged , the plexi cover has scratches from the trip from France . It would be best to have the plexi cover professionally buffed , as it is thick enough plexi to be all buffed out and look good as new. We will send pics of the cover , if they are not yet up. Also note that due to age the stains on the ship and sails have faded and the ship must be lit to look its best, 60" wide.
