About the Item
Small brass prismatic surveying compass made by J.M. Glauser London in 1939, no. B 5535 MK. IX, supplied to British officers. Typically used in recreational sailing, thus on boats less prone to magnetic deflections. In addition, it can be held in the hand and thus away from any disruptive magnetic fields.
It is equipped with a target sight system complete with an optical prism for magnification, and a goniometric compass rose that allows measurement of the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle. Complete with compass rose block and original leather case.
Good condition, fully functional.
Measures cm 5 x 2 -1.9 x 0.7 in.

The company was founded in 1929 by Swiss-born Jean Maurice Glauser. Its main production included prismatic, marching and pocket compasses. With the retirement of the founder, the company ceased operations in 1956.
The earliest historical records of the use in Europe of the magnetic directive force date from the late 12th or early 13th century, and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. Cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the 16th century. An accurate description can be found in Martín Cortés' short compendium De la esfera y de la arte de navegar (1551), which provides precise guidelines for the construction of the compass. Refinements of the instrument were largely responsible for the great discoveries of new lands from the mid-15th century onward.
