About the Item

The sextant is an instrument that allows to measure angles between two objects such as two points of a coast or a star, traditionally the sun of the earth and the horizon. Knowing the elevation of the sun and the time of day you can determine the latitude at which the observer is. This determination is made quite accurately by simple mathematical calculations to apply. This instrument, which replaced the astrolabe for greater accuracy, has been for several centuries of great importance in maritime navigation, including in air navigation as well, until more modern systems were imposed, especially in the last decades of the 20th century. Position determination by satellites. The sextant name comes from the scale of the instrument, which covers an angle of 60 degrees, that is, a sixth of a complete circle. Decorative item."
