About the Item
Cronometro da marina prodotto da Sewill, custodito in una cassa cubica in legno di palissandro, con spigoli e filettature in ottone, di dimensioni 18x18x19 cm. È dotato di due coperchi: il primo, alto e con vetro di consultazione che consente all’orologio di oscillare liberamente al suo interno; il secondo, più basso e interamente in legno, presenta al centro uno scudetto poligonale in ottone. Ai lati sono presenti maniglie estraibili per il trasporto.
Il meccanismo è contenuto in un cilindro di ottone a chiusura stagna, sospeso alla cassa tramite snodo cardanico, in modo da mantenere il cronometro in posizione orizzontale nonostante i movimenti della nave. Il quadrante riporta le ore in numeri romani, con un ampio quadrante dei secondi che occupa l’intero emiciclo inferiore e, in corrispondenza delle ore XII, un indicatore della riserva di carica della durata di 56 ore.
La cassa è priva della chiave di chiusura. La parte meccanica risulta funzionante, anche se a piena carica presenta una difficoltà nell’avvio.
