It is a graphometer inserted in a graduated circular crown and with the cardinal points of a compass, but without magnets, which is used to determine the position of the ship and detect objects not detected by normal compasses: by sighting two recognizable coastal details, the corresponding direction lines are plotted on the nautical chart; the point where these two lines meet is the point where the ship is located. The term pelorus comes from the name of Hannibal's pilot who assisted him in leading his troops across Europe and kept him in contact with Carthage across the sea.
