About the Item

German aneroid barometer of the 1950s in turned wood, brass, and glass, with weather directions in German and French. Good condition, working. Measurements 13x4 cm - inches 5.1x1.5. The last photo is the gift box. This is an ancient measuring instrument whose pressure-sensitive organ is a metal box called a barometric capsule. The capsule contracts or expands as a result of pressure changes, and its movements are transmitted to an indicating pointer by a mechanical system. The development of this type of barometer was due to Bourdon, a French inventor and industrialist (Paris 1808-1884), who had founded a factory in Paris in 1835 to build steam engines; in 1849 he invented the metal manometer, to which he linked his name, and in 1853 a type of aneroid barometer.
