About the Item
Modellino in scala di faro, realizzato negli anni Cinquanta in cartapesta, gesso e legno, su base in masonite.
Di forma circolare, è composto da due ordini sovrapposti di dimensioni differenti, separati da un balcone anulare: il primo, più massiccio, e il secondo, più slanciato, che ospita la lanterna contenente la lampada, la lente e il meccanismo di rotazione.
Alla base, tra gli scogli, si apre un piccolo porticciolo con un edificio, due pontili con alcune barche e un piccolo ponte.
Buono stato di conservazione.

I fari hanno da sempre rivestito un ruolo fondamentale per la sicurezza della navigazione marittima, segnalando coste, scogli e porti, e assistendo la navigazione notturna o in caso di nebbia.
Il faro più antico e celebre è quello di Alessandria d’Egitto, costruito tra il 280 e il 247 a.C., alto circa 100 metri e considerato una delle Sette meraviglie del mondo antico. Anche i Romani eressero, nei porti e lungo le coste dell’Impero, torri luminose come ausilio alla navigazione.
A partire dal XII secolo, con la ripresa del commercio marittimo, si registrò un nuovo impulso nella costruzione dei fari. La Lanterna di Genova, in funzione dal 1139, e il faro di Cordouan in Francia – il primo edificato in alto mare, tra il 1584 e il 1611 – ne sono esempi significativi.
Nel XIX secolo, l’introduzione della lente diottrica-prismatica di Fresnel rese possibile la produzione di fasci luminosi molto più potenti e visibili da grandi distanze, trasformando radicalmente l’illuminazione dei fari.
