About the Item

Antique brass nautical wall clock with 7-day spring winding, signed Smith's Circklewood N. W. 2, Model No. 2 of 1932. Diameter cm 19 - inches 7.5, depth cm 10 - inches 4. Overhauled and fully functional. The last photo is the gift box. Astral and Empire were originally trademarks of Williamson, a company that had an excellent reputation for its watch mechanisms. Later these brands passed to English Clock and Watch manufacturers Ltd, which in turn was acquired by Smiths in 1932. In the early catalogs the Smiths company called itself "Smith's," while in the 1935 catalogs we find two sections: the "Smith's" and the "Smith-Empire." In 1936 the company adopted the name "Smith"; from 1948 onward the version of the name "Smiths" became widespread, although the earlier version was retained for some models, until the end of production. The brand name "Smiths Astral" was used for many years for excellent quality nautical watches, along with other models called "Smiths Empire."
