About the Item

Scale model of Carlo Sciarelli's San Nicolo Auric Cutter, made in the 1980s. Planking hull and cotton sails. Good state of conservation. Measurements: 46 × 9.5 × 45 cm - 18 × 3.8 × 17.8 inches. Designed by engineer Carlo Sciarelli and built at the Frausin shipyard in Trieste, it was commissioned by Giulio Ciani Bassetti and launched in 1983. The project, identified with the number 90, was for a 7-meter boat designed as a study boat and, in Sciarelli's list of projects, is one of the few marked with two asterisks, a sign of particular merit. The classic lines recall Sciarelli's typical style, marked by elegance and attention to construction details. Carlo Sciarelli (Trieste, 1934 - 2006) was an engineer and naval designer and one of the most important figures in 20th-century Italian shipping. Educated and passionate, he was described as a "self-taught genius," deeply connected to the sea and classic ship design. Even as a boy he frequented the shipyards in the port of Trieste, which remained a constant source of inspiration for him, learning firsthand everything about boat building. His vast culture was reflected in his conception of the boat, seen not only as a technical object but also as an aesthetic and poetic creation. Over the course of his career he designed 138 boats, both sailing and motor boats; his first design was in the 1950s. His boats were distinguished by elegant, streamlined lines inspired by the classical tradition, driven by a constant search for beauty that resulted in harmonious proportions, solid and reliable hulls. Sciarelli succeeded in combining the sailing tradition of 18th- and 19th-century sailing ships with modern functionality. He was against the fads of the moment and did not chase the logic of the market: for him, "boats must look good and sail well." His boats are now considered true collector's items, treasured as works of art. In 1970 he published the volume "The Yacht. Origin and Evolution of the Yachting Sailboat," still a reference text for naval architects, historians and enthusiasts, considered a classic of world naval culture. In it, Sciarelli tells the story of the yacht as an aesthetic and spiritual expression. His most famous boats include Serenity, Alnair, Glorius, San Nicolò, Ritosa, and school boats for the Italian Navy. Famous quotes by Carlo Sciarelli: "Boats are not drawn with a ruler, but with the soul." "A boat must be beautiful: if it is beautiful, it will sail well."
