Sestante in ottone firmato Imray Son 89 102 Minories London, databile attorno alla metà del XIX secolo, strumento alloggiato nella sua scatola originale in mogano sagomata come lo strumento con cerniere, ganci di chiusura in ottone. Telaio in ottone con scala goniometrica in argento inciso incassata nell’arco, con scala da 0 a + 150, lembo e verniero in argento, impugnatura in ebano, 3 vetri colorati per lo specchio fisso e 4 per quello mobile, un microscopio per la lettura del verniero, specchio d’indice e d’orizzonte. La storia lunga e prestigiosa della ditta Imray risale alla metà del 1700, periodo durante il quale le navi mercantili riempivano la zona portuale di Londra, furono costruttori di strumenti nautici oltre ad essere editori di portolani, lavorando a fianco dei capitani e degli equipaggi delle navi allo scopo di migliorare le forniture navali. Misure scatola cm 32,5x27,5x13 – inches 12.8x10.8x5.1. Stato conservazione: molto buono, completo di base per l’appoggio realizzata in legno e ottone su misura. L'ultima foto è la confezione regalo. Il sestante è uno strumento ottico utilizzato nella navigazione astronomica per misurare l'altezza degli astri sull'orizzonte, in modo da ricavare le coordinate geografiche relative al punto nave. Ha la forma di un settore circolare di 60°, vale a dire un sesto di circonferenza, da cui la denominazione, al cui vertice viene imperniata un'alidada mobile sulla quale è fissato uno specchio che ruota con essa. Sul retro dello specchio è posto un supporto con un cannocchiale orientato verso un secondo specchio, argentato solo per una metà, che permette di osservare contemporaneamente l'orizzonte marino, in allineamento, e l'astro puntato, la cui immagine viene riflessa dallo specchio fissato all'alidada e successivamente dalla parte argentata dello specchio. Regolando la posizione dell'indice dell'alidada è possibile far collimare l'immagine dell'orizzonte con quella dell'astro e ricavare sulla scala graduata del settore di 60° l'angolo fra l'orizzonte e l'astro. Per effettuare con un sestante la misurazione dell'altezza di un astro (per esempio del Sole) si dispone lo strumento in un piano verticale e, guardando attraverso il dispositivo di mira, si traguarda la linea dell'orizzonte visibile attraverso la metà non argentata dello specchio fisso. Muovendo l'alidada, con la quale è solidale lo specchio, si fa in modo che i raggi luminosi provenienti dall'astro e successivamente riflessi dallo specchio mobile e dalla metà argentata dello specchio fisso vengano da quest'ultimo rinviati nella direzione di osservazione: se si guarda attraverso il dispositivo di mira, si vede l'immagine dell'astro, ottenuta per doppia riflessione, coincidere con la linea dell'orizzonte. L'altezza dell'astro è espressa dall'angolo il cui valore viene letto sulla scala graduata. Il filtro viene utilizzato quando l'astro da traguardare è il Sole. Fu Sir Isaac Newton l'inventore del principi della doppia riflessione negli strumenti di navigazione, ma queste ricerche non furono mai pubblicate. Successivamente, due uomini, indipendentemente l'uno dall'altro, scoprirono il sestante attorno al 1730 : John Hadley (1682-1744), matematico inglese, e Thomas Godfrey, (1704-1749), inventore americano. Ma solo nel 1758 l’ammiraglio John Campbell effettuò in mare aperto una serie di prove per sperimentare un nuovo metodo che si basava sulla distanza lunare come mezzo per calcolare la longitudine. Fu così che venne messo a punto il sestante. Inizialmente prodotti in ottone, avevano scale divise con grande precisione dai matematici che fabbricavano strumenti scientifici.
