This impressive 19th-century map titled “Turkije in Europa, Griekenland, Roemenië, Servië en Montenegro” provides a richly detailed view of the Balkan Peninsula and the remaining European territories of the Ottoman Empire during a critical historical moment. Published in 1876 in the Nieuwe Hand-Atlas der Aarde in haren Tegenwoordigen Toestand by M. Frijlink, revised by A. van Otterloo and printed by D. Noothoven van Goor in Leiden, this map captures the political and geographical landscape of the Balkans just before the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78) and the subsequent Treaty of Berlin reshaped the region.
The map spans from the Adriatic Sea to the Black Sea, and from the Danube valley down to Crete, covering modern-day Greece, Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Thrace, European Turkey, and the Aegean Islands. Hand-colored boundary lines clearly distinguish political units including the Kingdom of Greece, the Principality of Serbia, the United Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia (Romania), and Ottoman provinces such as Rumelia, Thessaly, Epirus, and Macedonia.
Major cities—Constantinople (Istanbul), Athens, Bucharest, Belgrade, Sofia, Salonika (Thessaloniki), Skodra, Ioannina, Larissa, Adrianople (Edirne), Varna, and Trabzon—are identified with fine engraving work. The map also reflects the complex geography of the region, showing mountain chains such as the Balkans, Pindus, Rhodope, and Dinaric Alps, as well as large river systems including the Danube, Morava, Drina, Vardar, Maritsa, and Iskar.
Inset maps provide valuable additional context: one illustrates the Bosphorus and surrounding fortifications, another focuses on Athens and Piraeus, and a third presents the region around the Gulf of Salonika and Northern Greece. These allow a closer look at strategic locations central to 19th-century European geopolitics.
This plate captures the Balkans at a moment of transition, when national movements were rising and the Ottoman Empire was gradually losing influence. The elegant engraving, refined typography, and harmonious composition are characteristic of Dutch educational cartography at its peak. Today, the map serves as a historical snapshot of a region defined by shifting borders, cultural layers, and emerging nation-states.
Condition Report:
Good condition with gentle toning and scattered small foxing marks, mostly in the margins. Original center fold as issued. Image clean and well-printed with soft, even hand-coloring. No tears, losses, or repairs.
Framing Tips: A light ivory or cream mat works beautifully to highlight the delicate color washes. A slim dark wood or black frame adds contrast and sophistication. Because the map includes attractive insets, a slightly wider mat border enhances balance and readability. Suitable for libraries, studies, travel-themed interiors, and collectors of Ottoman, Greek, and Balkan cartography.

A rare hand forged blacksmith-made wrought iron Victorian golf club cleek by Willie Wilson of St Andrews. The smooth faced lofting iron is heavy weighted, hickory shafted with crisp nicking to the top of the hosel where it meets the shaft. It is with leather sheep skin grip, the back of the iron club head stamped 'W. Wilson, Maker, St. Andrews'. The patina of the metal head is very attractive to collectors. Willie Wilson was one of the early ironmakers who produced fine clubs during the late 19th century.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
Willie Wilson of St Andrews was a well-known Scottish golf clubmaker. He began making irons in the 1860's and remained in business to the end of the century. He was among one of the most respected craftsmen in St Andrews, the "Home of Golf".

The globe is contained in its original case, which itself is covered in shark skin.
There are slight gaps in the original paint on the sphere. The case no longer closes.
The sphere measures 2.7 in (7 cm) in diameter whereas the case measures 2.9 in (7.4 cm) in diameter.

It shows the ecliptic divided into the days of the zodiacal calendar and the constellations represented as animals and mythological figures.
On the globe are delineated the equinoctial line, divided by degrees and hours, the ecliptic and the meridian (passing west of Greenwich). The continents are shaded and outlined in pink, green and yellow. It shows: the Cook routes; a wind rose in the Southern Indian Ocean; Antarctica without land; Africa with Negroland (Hermann Moll is considered the first geographer to name the West African region in his 1727 map. (Encyclopaedia Britannica, ed. 1902, under "States of Central Africa"); Tartary in Central Asia; the Mogul kingdom in northern India; in North America only New England, Virginia, Carolina, Florida, Mississippi are identified; California is already a peninsula; the northwest coast of America is "unknown parts" (Alaska is not described and it is only partially delineated, it was to become part of the United States in 1867); Mexico is named "Spain"; Central South America "Amazone America". Australia (which was to be so named after 1829) is called New Holland. The route of Admiral Anson is traced (1740) and the trade winds are indicated by arrows. (See Van der Krogt, P., Old Globes in the Netherlands, Utrecht 1984, p. 146 and Van der Krogt, P. - Dekker, E., Globes from the Western World, London 1993, pp. 115.)
Elly Dekker, comparing Moll’s 1719 globe and his re-edition (of which the one described above is a sample), identifies the differences between them: the two editions are quite similar to each other, but in the "anonymous" globe, compared to the previous globe of 1719, California looks like a proper peninsula - the reports of the Spanish explorers of the region had given rise to uncertainty over whether it was connected to the mainland or not. The geographical nature of California was confirmed after the explorations of Juan Bautista de Anza (1774-1776). The routes of Dampier's journey were partially erased and the route of Captain James Cook's first voyage was superimposed on them, and the geography of Australasia was adapted accordingly, including the denomination of the Cook Strait. This is an amazing authentic petrol lighter original from the art deco period. This industrial piece was originally designed and patented by Hans Silverknopf and was made in Austria back in 1925-26 by the Julius Meister Company, JMCO commonly know as IMCO. This is the final 4th model storm thumbwheel, called IFA-1000. It was crafted in solid polished brass and is fitted with mechanical sliding elements. This lighter has the rare sub-variety in the snuffer, is rounded and domed on top. The function is very simple, the metallic wheel on the lighter, when pushed down by one's thumb, will rub against the ferrocerium to produce a scorching spark. Simultaneously, the petrol vape is released, which is vaporized (depressurized) as soon as it exits the container. This lighter is original not a reproduction and has been cleaned and polished to bring back his original splendor.
IMCO
The company was founded by Julius Franz Meister in 1907, the Julian Meister Co. (JMCO/IMCO) began as a button and metal goods factory in Vienna. Bernhard Silberknopf became a company partner during 1911. The factory began manufacturing lighters after World War 1. The first lighter model, the "Imko Feuerzeug" was patented in 1920 and several other models were produced during the early 1920s based on this patent. Hans Silberknopf patented the design for the famous "Ifa" Sturmfeuerzeug in 1925. IMCO produced other several models based on this patent.
